Comments
The O antigen in Salmonella enterica is a highly variable surface polysaccharide composed of a repeated oligosaccharide (the O unit). Together with lipid A and core, it forms the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Gram-negative bacteria. The O-unit biosynthesis is determined by the rfb gene cluster. In strain M388 of Salmonella enterica, ISSe1 is located between the rfbV (putative tyvelosyl transferase) and rfc (putative O antigen polymerase) genes. It is suggested that ISSe1 has possibly mediated intraspecific recombination events observed in the serogroup D2. Its putative transposase has accumulated a number of stop codons and frameshifts (Xiang et al., 1995). Note that the ends of ISSe1 were assigned based on DNA sequence comparison, not from actual transposition data.
