IS605, originally described as RS2 (Bukanov and Berg, 1994), is associated with the virulence-associated region cag. IS605 ORF1 is similar to that of IS200 whereas ORF2 is related to IS1136. There are 9 or ten copies of IS605 in Helicobacter pylori NCTC11638, and about 25 % of the 70 independent clinical isolates of Helicobacter pylori harbour IS605-related elements (Akopyants et al., 1995; Kersulyte et al., 1996). IS605 harbours two divergent ORFs: ORF1, 148 aa (106-552) CS is related to those of IS200 (28 % identity) and ISH1-8 (24 % identity); ORF2, 399 aa (688-1887) is related to those of the IS891 family members (37 % identity with IS1341).
