IS1380 activity is associated with the loss of ethanol-oxidizing ability (8/11 insertions into the cytochrome c gene), and genetic instability of Acetobacter pasteurianus. Its transposition might be induced by ethanol or acetic acid. There are about 100 IS1380 copies in the Acetobacter pasteurianus genome. Hybridization experiments have shown the presence of IS1380 in Acetobacter aceti subsp. aceti, Acetobacter pasteurianus, Acetobacter polyoxogenes, and Acetobacter xylinum .
