IS1222 is located upstream of the nifJ gene on the 200-kb self-transmissible nif+ (nitrogen-fixation) plasmid pEA9. This plasmid originated from the nitrogen-fixing Enterobacter agglomerans Kleeberger strain 339 isolated from the rhizosphere of barley and wheat (Steibl and Leweke, 1995). A total of three IS1222 copies are located on the pEA9 plasmid and one copy is present on the chromosome. Note that Enterobacter agglomerans has now been renamed Rahnella aquatilis.
