IS1165 copy number varies from 4 to 13 in Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. cremoris, allowing genetic fingerprints of this bacteria. 154 bp downstream of the FIIIlac gene from Lactobacillus casei (Alpert and Chassy, 1988) lies a sequence of 41 bp nearly identical to the right end of IS1165.
