This sequence has been submitted by A. Rakin (Podladchikova et al., 1994). IS100 can generate Ca2+-independence insertion mutants in Yersinia pestis. Two IS100 copies flank (and probably contribute to the deletion of) a 102 kb chromosomal region (HPI or high pathogenicity island) associated with the "pigmentation" phenotype (pgm locus). This region consists of several iron-repressible genes and includes fyuA and irp2 (enterobactin synthetase F) (Rakin et al., 1995). For most of yersinae, virulence correlates with the sensitivity to pesticin, a bacteriocin produced by Yersinia pestis. This pesticin sensitivity is itself determined by the presence of the FyuA yersiniabactin, the receptor for pesticin. Since this receptor can also work as receptor for siderophore-iron complex involved in iron uptake in iron-deprived tissues, this correlates well with its impact on virulence. Note that the extremely high homology (>97 % identity) between the fyuA and irp2 genes from Yersinia and those from certain Escherichia coli strains strongly suggest their lateral transfer.
