ISH8 has been isolated through its inactivation of the gvp operon (gas vesicle proteins, Vac-) (Halladay et al., 1993). ISH8 DNA sequence is 94 % identical to that of ISH26. No full-length putative transposase is apparently present inside ISH8 (but its DNA sequence needs to be confirmed; DasSarma, pers. comm.). However, there is a 28 % identity between a long ISH8 ORF and the putative IS5377 transposase, over a 233-aa overlap.
Copies of ISH8 were present in Halobacterium salinarum pNRC100 (see ISH8A, ISH8B, ISH8C, ISH8D, ISH8E).
