IS701 was originally isolated as a spontaneous insertion into the cpcF gene (encoding the beta subunit of the phycocyanin, a phycobiliprotein involved in light harvesting), giving rise to a pigmentation mutant. Hybridization experiments showed that at least 15 copies of IS701 are present in the Calothrix sp. PCC7601 genome (Mazel et al., 1991). IS701 putative transposase is 28 % identical (337-aa overlap) to that of IS1452 from Acetobacter pasteurianus NCI1452.
