Bordetella pertussis is the aetiological agent of the human disease pertussis (whooping cough). IS481 differs from IS481v1 and IS481v2 at 8 and 5 positions, respectively. Proposal: DR = CTAG, rather than 0 (all the coordinates for all the iso-IS481 elements have been changed accordingly); although this assumption remains to be confirmed, the case of IS481v1 will perfectly fit with this proposal. IS481 is apparently absent from Bordetella parapertussis and Bordetella bronchiseptica (McLafferty et al., 1988). Note that IS481 harbors only one ORF. Moreover, no obvious translational frameshifting site can be seen. It has been shown that the promoter and transcritpion start site of the katA (catalase) gene was located inside the right IR of an IS481 element (DeShazer et al., 1984). A distantly-related 177-aa ORF (32 % identity from residues 160 to 290) has been found near the nod and nif genes of the Sym plasmid pRP2JI of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar phaseoli (Yeoman et al., 1996, Accession Number X84099). It is most probably a vestigial element.
IS481 is also present in Bordetella holmesii (Accession number : AF349431), this sequence is shorter than those of database (1010 pb instead of 1045) and 99% DNA similar to tha database sequence.
