IS15 corresponds to the insertion of IS15-DI into IS15-DII. IS15DI and IS15DII differ by 4 bp (2 aa), IS15DI and IS26 by 3 bp, and IS15DII and IS26 by 1 bp. The major event mediated by IS15 and IS15D is the formation of cointegrates through replicative transposition. In Providencia stuartii BM2667, the amikacin-resistant Tn1528 consists of two direct copies of IS15D flanking the aph(3')-VIa gene, and is located on the pIP1848 conjugative plasmid. Tn1528 transposes via cointegrate formation, at a frequency of 4 x 10-5 in Escherichia coli (Lambert et al., 1994).
