IS1397 has been found to be specifically associated with BIME (Bacterial Interspersed Mosaic Elements), inserted in the central (loop) part of the small PU (Palindromic Units) (Bachellier et al., 1997). The reasons for this target specificity remain unknown. IS1397 is present in a subset of natural Escherichia coli isolates. IS1397 transposase is 40 % identical to that of IS1223 (from Lactobacillus johnsonii).
