IS1358 is located between the otnB (involved in the regulation of the O antigen chain length) and rfbD (GDP-D-mannose dehydratase) genes. Three sequences of IS1358 have been released: Stroeher et al., 1995 [X91246], Bik et al., 1996 [X90547], and Dumontier et al., 1995 [U24571]. Since the copy quoted and described by Stroeher et al. displays one nt difference (sequencing error? at position 704) with the other two, the other IS1358 sequence will be used as reference. Interestingly, IS1358 is followed by a 31-bp sequence identical to its last 31 bp, in a direct orientation. Moreover, there is a 16-bp overlap between the end of the otnB gene and the left end of IS1358. IS1358 resembles the H-repeats of the Escherichia coli RHS B and E elements. Its putative transposase has been visualized from a construct where its expression was driven from the T7 promoter (Stroeher et al., 1995). Note that in strain O1, a deletion version of IS1358 (IS1358d1) is located downstream of another insertion element, IS1004 (IS200-IS605 family). IS1358 is present in most of the Vibrio cholerae strains tested, generally in one copy (Bik et al., 1995).
Four copies were detected in V. cholerae O2 strains, four copies were detectedin V. cholerae O22 strains, and six copies were detected in V. cholerae O155 strains.
