The synthesis of capsular polysaccharides (cps genes) is considered to be the sine qua non conditions of pneumococcal virulence. IS1202 is inserted 1 kb downstream of the dexB (glucan-1,6-alpha-gucosidase) gene, which is known to be part of the multiple-sugar metabolism operon (Morona et al., 1994). IS1202 copy number varies from 0 to 5, among the Streptococcus pneumoniae strains tested.
