IS1076 has 24 nt differences with IS904 (including 12 deletions and 1 insertion). IS1076R is flanked by a sequence corresponding to the first 44 bp of IS1076 (insertion within an iso-IS1076 ?). Contrary to IS3, only one long ORF is present in IS1076. The last 300 residues of this ORF are 96 % identical to those of IS1068 ORF2. IS1076L and IS1076R flank two genes involved in a Clp-family proteolytic activity (Huang et al., 1991). Note that a 300-bp fragment displaying 54 % DNA identity with IS1076 is located downstream the alpha-glucosidase gene of Pediococcus pentosaceus PPE1.0 (Leenhouts et al., 1994; Accession Number Z32771). At least 8 copies of IS1076 are present on the 2,560 kb chromosome of the Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris reference strain MG1363 (Le Bourgeois et al., 1995).
