Streptococcus gordonii is one of the primary colonizer of oral tissues, due to the expression of a vast repertoire of adherence properties, including adhesin polypeptides. The products of two major genes, sspA and sspB, seem to play a major role in the adherence to salivary pellicle (the SAG, salivary agglutinin glycoproteins) and to other oral bacteria. ISSg1 is located in the intergenic region between sspA and sspB (Demuth et al., 1997). Although originally described by Demuth et al. in 1990, it was only noted by Zhou et al. in 1995. There is one ISSg1 copy in Streptococcus gordonii M5, and its position has remains the same over the last ten years of laboratory cultivation (Demuth et al., 1997). Contrary to IS1167, ISSg1 has a single ORF, sharing between 85 and 95 % identity to those of IS1167. Compared to the other putative transposases of the ISL3 family, that of ISSg1 is "missing" an 80-residue internal segment (around position 200 of IS1251 transposase, with which it shares 29 % identity). ISSg1 is related to IS1167 (90 % identity at the DNA level, but very little similarity at the protein level !
