ISRm5 was originally discovered because of the insertion of an ISRm3 copy in the middle of it. This association is apparently quite common, as shown by hybridization experiments. ISRm5 transposition activity has been tested for, but not recorded yet (Laberge et al., 1995). ISRm5 is present in 61/61 isolates of Rhizobium meliloti, with a copy number varying between 3 and 11 (Barran et al., 1994). There is also a good correlation between ISRm5-generated hybridization profiles and phage typing. A species-specific ISRm5-derived probe has also been used for the detection and genomic characterization (relationship) of nonsymbiotic and symbiotic R meliloti isolated from soil or from alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and sweet clover (Melilotus alba) (Bromfield et al., 1995).
