ISL3 is located between the lacZ and prtP (cell wall associated protease) genes. ISL3 ORF is 34 % identical to that of IS1165. At least 1 variant (ISL3A) with one bp different at position 16 has also been partially characterized. ISL3 is not present in Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. delbrueckii (3 strains tested), Lactobacillus helveticus (6 strains tested), Lactococcus lactis (2 strains tested), Streptococcus thermophilus (8 strains tested), and Bifidobacterium bifidum (6 strains tested). Its copy number varies from 1 to more than 7. ISL3 promotes adjacent deletions (recorded in the case of the lacS-lacZ and prtP genes).
