Moraxella lacunata and Moraxella bovis are human and bovine ocular pathogens, respectively. They use a site-specific DNA inversion of a chromosomal segment to alter the expression of their 4 pilin genes, whose products mediate adherence of the bacterium to corneal tissue. Piv proteins are site-specific recombinases governing the inversion system. The Piv proteins from M. lacunata (PivML) and M. bovis (PivMB) are 98 % identical. The acronym "ISI" used here stands for IS-like Inversion system (J. Mahillon).
