ISBce8 was found by screening completely sequenced genomes for sequences homologous to the IS4 transposase using BLASTP. Multiple sequence alignments revealed a conserved DDE motif : D(N2)-70-D(N3)-150-E(C1). The copy number in Bacillus cereus ATCC 10987 is 1.
In addition to the transposase, this element carries an ORF (ORF2) coding for a protein similar to members of the GCN5-related histone N-acetyltransferase (GNAT) superfamily, which possibly inactivates antibiotics of the aminoglycoside family.
